Phase 1: Weight loss kick-start: By eliminating gluten, sugars and starches from the diet, your body is ‘reset’ and will begin burning fats rather than carbs – resulting in faster weight loss.
Phase 2: Steady weight loss: By slowly reintroducing healthy carbs into your diet, you’ll start to experience a more steady weight loss, and will eliminate the cravings felt from more restrictive diets.
Phase 3: Maintaining your goal weight: Once you’ve successfully reached your weight loss goal, the program provides lots of simple recipes and helpful tips so you can make real lifestyle changes.
Signing up to South Beach Diet is fairly simple. Once users have chosen whether they want only the 4 week meal plan, or auto delivery, they will be redirected to create an account and provide payment.
After the order has been placed, customers can expect their meals within 4-10 business days. Most of the prepared food will arrive flash frozen and ready to be simply heated up and enjoyed. Snacks, and some other foods will be ready to eat.

The first two weeks, or Phase 1, is entirely gluten free. After that, many of the meals do contain gluten, but neither phase is suitable for Vegetarian, Vegan, Paleo or Kosher diets.

South Beach Diet includes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Snacks. There are about 30 options for breakfasts, 50 for Lunches and Dinner, and 11 for Snacks.
Meal options vary from shakes and protein bars, to full meals such as Fiery Chilli, or Garlic Ginger Beef and Broccoli. Snacks could be brownie bars or ice cream shakes, or protein rich options such as nuts or meat jerky.
The full 4 week meal plan is $460.

As anyone would expect from a weight loss plan created by a cardiologist, there’s a lot of science which goes into this program. Phase 1 includes foods which do not include sugar and refined carbohydrates. This is a two week process, where the body will be encouraged to burn fats for fuel instead of carbs.
Dr Agatston describes the Vicious Cycle of Carb Intake, where a user eats refined carbs, which leads to a rise in blood sugar and insulin flow. Fat storage is increased, and then when the blood sugar levels drop, the body begins to crave more refined carbs again.
To combat this, his diet plan involves eating less carbs, so that blood sugar spikes and insulin surges decrease. The body uses fats for fuel rather than carbs, and there is less need for sugar, lessening cravings.
After phase 1 is complete, phase 2 reintroduces certain foods, but the user’s body will no longer crave the sweetness or refined carbs it did only a few weeks previously.
The program aims to enable a steady weight loss journey, and phase 3 involves maintaining a healthy weight while dining out and making meals at home. To this end, South Beach Diet includes 2 practice days each week, even in Phase 1.
For two days per week, users will need to understand the science, create healthy choices which fit with the program, or dine out sensibly with the diet plan in mind.
